As we head into 2015 its time to start thinking about trophies at the denouncement of 2014/2015.
The best placed side in England to bring in the silverware appears to be Chelsea, who have looked like the best team in the Premier League since the season kicked off.
Jose Mourinho sides almost always peak in his second season at the club and it looks like it could be a trophy-laden campaign in 2014/2015 for The Special One. Having lost one game in all competitions, can Chelsea win the quadruple.Below are some reasons why you may want to stick a cheeky pound or two on Chelsea doing the quadruple!
1. Chelsea are clearly the best team in the Premier League. This has been apparent from day of the season and at best its a two-horse race. But, do Manchester City have the desire to keep up with Chelsea, there has to be a serious question mark over the current champions who seem unable at the moment to claw their way back to parity, with the inexplicable draw against Burnley on Sunday, just as Chelsea dropped two points on the same day at Southampton.
2. Jose Mourinho and Chelsea win leagues when they are top at Christmas. At Porto, Chelsea in his first spell, Inter and Real Madrid, the Portuguese boss has won the league when his team have been top at Xmas. Similarly, on all previous occasions when Chelsea won the Premier League, they were top at Christmas.
3. Strong favourites for the Capital One Cup. A two legged semi-final with Liverpool wasn’t the best possible outcome for the Blues but they face the best team left in the competition and over 180 minutes, should be too good for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Spurs, their likely opponents in the final, are pretty much the team Chelsea like to play more than any other.
4. Favourites for the FA Cup. Chelsea begin their FA Cup campaign at home to Watford on Sunday. The Hornets are in decent form but should be defeated comfortably at Stamford Bridge. In the 2000s, Chelsea are the side to have won this competition the most (five times) and Jose Mourinho, John Terry and Didier Drogba all have fond memories of this competition.
5. One of three teams that can win the Champions League. Realistically, there are three sides that can win the Champions League this season: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea. The Blues kick off the knockout rounds against PSG, a draw Jose Mourinho said he wanted just days before UEFA pulled the ball out.
You fancy Chelsea against the weaker teams and versus the favourites Jose Mourinho gives them a real edge. Versus Madrid, The Special One will be facing his former club and players, whilst against Bayern it will be another battle with Pep Guardiola.
6. Didier Drogba. The Ivorian simply loves big games. When it comes to the crunch, Drogba was king of the match winner first time round at Chelsea and appeared to have nerves of steel on the biggest stage. Now back in the squad, in the very biggest matches, Diego Costa will do much of the leg work and don’t be surprised if Drogba grabs the glory late on.
7. The summer signings. Most new players in England take time. Not the Chelsea summer signings. Cesc Fabregas looks set to break the Premier League assist record. Diego Costa is already banging in goals and ruffling feathers all the time. Whilst Thibaut Courtois has justified the decision to drop Petr Cech. Even Filipe Luis, who has struggled for regular games, looks like a class act.
Whether Chelsea win one or four trophies this season, Chelsea’s summer spending will go down as one of the greatest of the Roman Abramovich era.
8. A rock solid defence. Statistically, John Terry is playing the best football of his career. And, the partnership with Gary Cahill is immense. Branislav Ivanovic is most pundits’ right back of the season so far whilst Cesar Azpilicueta is perhaps the best defender in England.
9. A midfield of supreme talent. Nemanja Matic is simply awesome. And the attacking option available to Chelsea are just obscene. Eden Hazard is perhaps the best player in Jose Mourinho’s first XI whilst the likes of Oscar and Willian are also match winners. Andre Schurrle, one of the best players at the World Cup, has barely played so far this season!
