Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has immediately apologised for headbutting Hull's David Meyler in their 4-1 victory at the KC Stadium.

In ugly scenes the Toon Army clashed with the midfielder as the Tigers man attempted to retrieve the ball for a quick throw-in. The flashpoint overshadowed Newcastle's performance and came with the visitors leading 3-1. Referee Kevin Friend booked Meyler for his role but was with no other option than to send the Magpies boss to the stands. Punishment from the FA is likely to be forthcoming and a contrite Pardew was quick to express his regret.

"I apologise, not just to everyone at Hull, but our fans as well and it's a wake up call for me to go and sit down," he said.
