Afrobasket 2015: President Buhari Disappoints African Champions - Jacob Ajom

“Finally, D’Tigers are champions of Africa, beating her strongest nightmare, Angola. Congrats guys, Rio is next … proudly Nigeria!” That was Ogoma Anyahara’s reaction to D’Tigerss victory over Angola in the final of the 2015 AfroBasket Championship in Rades, Tunisia last Sunday.

Anyahara who works as an administrative officer for a government agency reacted on Fiba’s official website for the tournament.

It was a special day for Nigerian basketball and its teeming fans. A day that brought to reality, a long-standing dream – the continental title, an equivalent to the Africa Cup of Nations the Super Eagles have won three times. The entire sporting world rose in unison to acknowledge the iconic feat of D’Tigers as the all foreign based team outclassed Angola – of all nations – 74 -65 to lift the coveted trophy after nearly two weeks of toil, sweat and endurance. Never had Nigeria Basketball been so domineering than what was witnessed at the tournament.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the national men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, on their victory over Angola in Sunday’s final of the FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia.

A statement on Monday by presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, says President Buhari joins other sports-loving Nigerians in applauding D’Tigers’ exhilarating 74-65 victory over their Angolan opponents which also secured Nigeria’s qualification for the men’s basketball event at next year’s Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro.

The President commends the players for displaying exemplary strength, courage, determination and patriotism as well as great skills and creativity to dethrone Angola, the perennial African basketball champions.

Afrobasket 2015: Nigeria Defeat Senegal To Qualify For Final

The Lions of Senegal failed in their attempt last night to have a repeat of their AfroBasket 2013 record as they fell to the superior power play of Nigeria’s D’ Tigers in a game that went into over­time with Nigeria emerg­ing the winner by 88-79 points and a chance to play for the sole ticket for Rio 2016 Olympics.

Nigeria began the game on a very fast pace dominating the first quar­ter 18-15 but Senegal came back strong in the second quarter winning 22-17 in their favor and also took the third quar­ter scoring 26-22 points but were overwhelmed by Nigeria’s comeback in the last and final quarter amassing a total of 19-13 points and tying the game at 76-76 at full time.

Afrobasket Championship: Tunisia 70-59 Nigeria

Tunisia proved too much for Nigeria in Sunday's highly-anticipated game of AfroBasket 2015 Group A as the hosts held off the Western Africans 70-59.

Playing in front of an almost sellout crowd boosted the Tunisians who played their best game of the tournament so far.

As a result of the win, Tunisia head into the Round of 16 as winners of the group ahead of the Nigerians, Central African Republic (CAF) and Uganda.

Afrobasket Championship: Nigeria 98-59 Uganda

D’Tigers continued their good run, thrashing debutants Uganda 98-59 in their second game played on Friday in the AfroBasket 2015 holding at the Salle Omnisport de Rades, Tunisia. Nigeria started the tournament beating the Central African Republic 88-63 on Wednesday.

Chamberlain Oguchi and Al-Farouq Aminu were in fine form as D’Tigers took the lead from the first quarter, which ended 27-16. The Nigerians continued to dominate the game in the second quarter, which ended 48-30 in their favour.

The Nigerian side, coached by William Voigt, started the second half on a high, scoring 32 points to Uganga’s 11 to end the third quarter 80-41. They scored 18 more points in the fourth quarter to complete the trouncing.

Afrobasket Championship: Nigeria Set To Conquer Africa

Nigeria men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will take on Central African Republic today in their quest to rule Africa for the first time at the 2015 Afrobasket Championship holding in Rades, Tunisia from August 19 to 30. The tournament, which serves as qualifier for the Rio 2016 Olympics, is featuring 16 teams.

Nigeria are in Group A alongside Central African Republic, Uganda, and current champions Tunisia. D’Tigers are favourites in the encounter, just as they would be when they confront Uganda in their second group game on Friday.

The must-watch game of the group would be the clash between Nigeria and Tunisia in their final group game on Sunday. The clash is expectedly so due to the array of experienced players in both teams.
