Depay Makes Request For United's Number 7 Shirt

Memphis Depay has formally requested the Manchester United number 7 shirt, according to the Mail.
With Angel Di Maria leaving for PSG, the club’s most historic number is now vacant and up for grabs, and will surely be assigned before the start of the season.

Depay wore the number 9 shirt in pre-season, but with the number 7 now vacant, he fancies the challenge.

And newcomer Depay looks like the perfect fit, both in terms of playing style and character. The number 7 shirt has gained its iconic status due not only to the great players who have worn it, but the characters: George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Depay Can Match Beckam's Free-Kick Ability

And Irwin - who played alongside Beckham under Sir Alex Ferguson for the Red Devils and was something of a free-kick master himself - feels Depay can replicate the skills of the former Real Madrid midfielder.

I Was Forced To Sign Memphis Depay - Louis Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he was "forced" to sign Memphis Depay to prevent him from joining Paris Saint-Germain. It was confirmed on Thursday that winger Depay would move to Old Trafford from PSV for an undisclosed fee, an announcement that ended 12 months of speculation linking the 21-year-old with a transfer to the Premier League.

However, Van Gaal insists that - in an ideal world - he would not have delved into the transfer market until the end of the season.
