The QPR defender confirmed news of his wife's passing at Royal Marsden Hospital in a statement on the club's official website on Saturday.

It read: "My soul mate slipped away last night. Rebecca, my wonderful wife, passed away peacefully after a short battle with cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

Manchester City fans have been taunted for not filling the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday by ex-Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand. City announced in June they would expand their stadium to accommodate more than 55,000 fans and that work would be completed in time for the start of the next Premier League season.

Van Persie Was The Most Affected By Ferguson's Departure

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie was hit hardest by Alex Ferguson's retirement, according to Rio Ferdinand. Ferguson retired in May 2013, less than a year after bringing Van Persie to the Premier League giants from rivals Arsenal.

QPR defender Ferdinand, still at United at the time, said the Netherlands international - who struggled for fitness under David Moyes last season and has scored just once this term - was the most affected by Ferguson's departure.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand will leave Manchester United after the Old Trafford club did not offer the central defender a new contract.

He made over 400 appearances over 12 years at Old Trafford, and apparently intends to continue playing next season despite being linked with a possible role as a TV pundit. He leaves the club having six Premier League titles, the 2008 Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, two League Cups and five Community Shields.

"I have thought long and hard over the last few months about my future and, after 12 fantastic years playing for what I regard as the best club in the world, I have decided the time is right for me to move on," said Ferdinand.

Rio Ferdinand hopes to remain at Manchester United to help resurrect the fallen Premier League giants after an "embarrassing" season under David Moyes.

With his contract set to expire in June, the 35-year-old former England captain had appeared set to finish his 12-year career at the club after being used sparingly under recently sacked Scotsman Moyes.

"I'm going to continue playing," Ferdinand told British media. "Whether it's here, I don't know, but I hope so.
"I am sure that whoever is here, whoever is managing, the aim of this club is win trophies and championships and we have done that for 25 years. Long may that continue."
