Interim Nigeria head coach Florence Omagbemi listed Arsenal forward Asisat Oshoala and Desire Oparanozie from the start, and it was expected that the Falcons, favourites going into the game, would come away with a win.
The African champions had loads of scoring chances but failed to make them count until late in the first half.
Chioma Wogu, who had only come on for injured Oparanozie in the 44th minute, scored a minute later as Nigeria took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Senegal's goal seemed to only spur on the African champions to attack the Lionesses in an attempt to get a second goal.
However, the Senegalese goalkeeper Ouleye Dieye did well to keep her team in the game as they secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Nigeria will play hosts to Senegal in the second leg at the National Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday.
