Players, Officials Celebrate Oshoala's Liverpool Move

Players and officials of Nigeria women’s league champions, Rivers Angels, have been voicing their excitement following the move of star striker Asisat Oshoala to English Women’s Super League champions, Liverpool Ladies.

Oshoala, who was voted the most valuable player at the 2014 Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup in Canada, was also the top goal scorer as the Falconets finished runners-up to Germany.

The reigning African Women's Footballer of the Year was also in inspired form for Rivers Angels last season as she led them to their first league title victory since 2010.

She was also impressive as the Port Harcourt club wrapped up the double with a goal in the 2-0 success over Sunshine Queens in the Federation Cup.

A visit to the camp of the Angels in Port Harcourt on Friday found Oshoala’s former teammates in buoyant mood as they celebrated the move of the striker.

Club captain Lucky Atu said Oshoala would be missed but also stated that her impressive performances last year meant it was inevitable she would move to new pastures.

“Asisat is young but she is a leader. Her attitude, even during training session, was quite commendable,” the veteran said.

Predicting a successful time for the youngster in England, Atu added that Oshoala would soon attract bigger recognition than Nigeria’s most famous woman football export, Mercy Akide.

“Mercy Akide was a player that loved to wait in the penalty box and score but Asisat can score by picking up the ball from her own box.

“She can defend, play in midfield and score. More importantly, she never stops working hard.

“I have said it before and I will say it again, Asisat will be better than Mercy,” she said.
