Last term, Real lost 1-0 at the Bernabéu and managed a 2-2 draw at the Calderón in La Liga, triumphed in both legs of the Copa semi-finals (3-0 at home and 2-0 away) and snatched a 4-1 extra-time victory in Lisbon from the jaws of defeat.
Right at the beginning of this campaign, Ancelotti's men bade goodbye to their dreams of securing an unprecedented sextuple, losing out to Diego Simeone's troops in the Spanish Super Cup courtesy of a 1-1 stalemate at home and a 1-0 reverse across town. They were beaten again by the 'Colchoneros' in La Liga a couple of weeks later, and now they have been dumped out of the Spanish Cup by the same opposition, being outfought and outfoxed in a 2-0 first-leg loss at the Calderón and seeing their comeback hopes dashed by conceding early goals in both halves of the 2-2 draw in the second leg.
To add insult to injury, Thursday night's disappointment also represented Ancelotti's first early exit in a knockout competition since joining Real Madrid. The club won every knockout tournament it was in last season, but now finds itself only competing on two fronts.
