Manchester United 3-1 Liverpool: Martial Seals Big Win In Debut Match

Anthony Martial scored on his Manchester United debut as the Red Devils defeated fierce rivals Liverpool 3-1 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Daley Blind opened the scoring early in the second half and then saved his side at the other end with a tremendous goal-line clearance before Ander Herrera won and converted a penalty to put the hosts two up.

David de Gea, who signed a new contract this week, could do nothing to stop a stunning Christian Benteke overhead kick on his return to the starting line-up following the collapse of his move to Real Madrid before new signing Martial marked his debut by coming off the substitutes' bench to seal the points with an excellent solo goal.

Champions League Spot Was United's Top Objective - Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera is targeting a second-place finish for Manchester United, but feels any position in the top four would represent success. Manchester United will have achieved their primary aim for the season if they finish in the Premier League's top four, according to midfielder Ander Herrera.

In their first season under Louis van Gaal, United retain hope of a second-place finish with four games remaining. Herrera is eager to overhaul Manchester City and Arsenal, both two points better off with the latter holding a game in hand, but feels his club can be content with their progress following a seventh-place finish under David Moyes last term.

Man United Can Still Get Better - Louis van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side can still improve despite Sunday's 4-0 Premier League victory over QPR. The hugely influential Angel Di Maria scored on his home debut as United ended the wait for a first competitive win under the Dutchman in style, with Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata also on the scoresheet.

Radamel Falcao, who completed a season-long loan move from Monaco on transfer deadline day, was introduced as a second-half substitute for his first appearance in a United shirt, while Van Gaal fielded two other new faces, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, from the start.
