Mali 2-3 Nigeria: Dream Team VI Survive Late Come Back Scare

The Dream team started on a high scoring path but was fast to concede two goals in what ended like a shaky start for Siasia's boys.

After a scoring three unreplied goals in the first half, Nigeria had to hang on to beat Mali 3-2 in their opening U23 AFCON Group B match in Mbour, Senegal, Sunday night.

Cameroon and Mali are set to meet in an interesting 2015 CAF African Cup of Nations, Group D opener at the Estadio de Malabo in Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday night.
Kick-off is at 9pm (SA time).

Both sides will aim for three points to launch their campaign for glory in the 30th edition of the continental showpiece. In their previous meetings, both sides have already met twice at the Afcon. AS Real Bamako of Mali lost 1-0 at home to Nigeria’s Enyimba in the second leg first round game of the Caf Champions League played at the Stade Modibo Keïta.

CHAN: NIGERIA 1 MALI 2 : Home Eagles Suffer Defeat

Mali started their 2014 African Nations Championship campaign on a winning note when they defeated West African rivals Nigeria 2-1 in their Group A encounter at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night.

Abdoulaye Sissoko opened the scoring in the first half and Adama Traore added the second soon after the break, while substitute Gbolahan Salami scored the only goal for the Super Eagles.

It was the Eagles who threatened first in the 7th minute when Chigozia Agbim punched Sissoko’s corner straight into the path of Lassana Diarra, but his goalbound shot was cleared by Azubuike Egwuekwe.

Mali took the lead in the 18th minute when Nigeria lost the ball in their half, allowing Sissoko to fire past Agbim from the right side of the box with the aid of a deflection from Egwuekwe.

CHAN: Nigeria To Play Mali Today

Debutants Nigeria will confront fellow West Africans the Eagles of Mali in a Group A at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday in Cape Town.

Fellow Group A rivals Hosts South Africa and Mozambique will open the biennial championship reserved for locally based players in Africa.

Nigeria have failed to qualify for the previous two editions of the competition, while Mali will be making their second appearance at the competition after making it to the last edition in 2012.

To reach CHAN 2014, Nigeria saw off Cote d'Ivoire on a 4-3 aggregate, while Mali defeated Guinea 3-2 on aggregate.
