FIFA U-17 World Cup: Mexico To Face Nigeria In Semi-Final

Mexico will be seeking their pound of flesh when they face Nigeria in Thursday’s FIFA U17 World Cup semi-final in Concepcion after they lost twice to the defending champions two years ago.

Two-time champions Mexico brushed aside Ecuador 2-0 Tuesday night to earn a chance to get their revenge against the Golden Eaglets.

They were the better team and deserved their win. Nigeria dumped then defending champions Mexico 5-1 in a group game before the North Americans showed great character by fighting their way to the final, where they again lost 3-0 to the Eaglets.

GOLD CUP FINAL: Mexico Trash Jamaica 3-1 To Lift Trophy For 7th Time

Mexico shook off two controversy-laden triumphs to defeat Jamaica 3-1 in Sunday's Gold Cup final, hoisting a record seventh trophy and shrugging off any notion of a tainted title.

Mexican captain Andres Guardado scored in the 31st minute, Jesus Corona added another in the 47th and Oribe Peralta scored in the 61st as two defensive blunders by Michael Hector doomed Jamaica's championship dream in the biennial North American regional football tournament.

"We're very happy," Mexico manager Miguel Herrera said. "We dominated the ball. We got the rhythm we wanted and controlled the play. It's a great satisfaction for all of us."

GOLD CUP: CONCACAF Accepts Referee Errors In Semi Final Clash After Petitions

The decision to award Mexico a penalty late in their Gold Cup semi-final win over Panama was a wrong one, CONCACAF have admitted but the body won't reverse the decision.

CONCACAF have admitted errors were made in Mexico's controversial semi-final win over Panama in the Gold Cup. American referee Mark Geiger's decision to award Miguel Herrera's side a penalty in the 89th-minute was met with a temporary walk-off protest from Panama's players.

Following the match, Costa Rica - denied by a dubious penalty call in the quarter-finals against Mexico - joined forces with Panama to lobby FIFA and CONCACAF to investigate whether any match-fixing had taken place.

MEXICO vs JAMAICA: Herrera Wary Of First Time Gold Cup Finalist

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera warned his team against taking Jamaica lightly in their CONCACAF Gold Cup final on Sunday. Herrera’s men claimed a controversial 2-1 win over 10-man Panama after extra time in their semi-final in Atlanta.

They needed a late penalty from Andres Guardado to equalise in regulation time, and a second Guardado spot-kick saw them eventually capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Herrera had been under growing pressure at the helm after several unconvincing performances. His team only won one group game – thrashing Cuba – as they finished second to Trinidad and Tobago.

GOLD CUP: Maradona Calls For Replay Of Mexico - Panama Match

Argentina football legend Diego Maradona has demanded CONCACAF replay the Gold Cup semi-final between Mexico and Panama after there has been various complain over poor officiating of the match.

Diego Maradona posted his support for the Panama players, and his clear disdain for all things Mexican football, after Thursday's CONCACAF Gold Cup controversy.

Mexico overcame Panama 2-1 after extra time, not before a shocking penalty call by American referee Mark Geiger that allowed Miguel Herrera's side to equalise deep into second-half injury time in regulation.
Maradona, owner of the famous 'Hand of God' moment in the 1986 World Cup, called for the semi-final to be replayed and for Geiger to lose his job following the controversy.

GOLD CUP: Lowly Ranked Guatemala Hold Mexico To Goalless Draw

Guatemala managed to hold Mexico to a draw in a dour CONCACAF Gold Cup clash on Sunday.
Mexico were held to a 0-0 draw by a stubborn Guatemala to move a step closer to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals.

Miguel Herrera's men were left frustrated at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona as they failed to break down less-fancied Guatemala.

Mexico - six-time Gold Cup champions - had thrashed Cuba 6-0 in their Group C opener and had most of the ball against Guatemala, but lacked a cutting edge against a side that finished with 10 men, following Jose Manuel Contreras' red card.

GOLD CUP: Mexico Trash Cuba 6-0

Striker Oribe Peralta scored a hat-trick as Mexico ended a seven-match winless streak with a 6-0 rout of Cuba in the Concacaf Gold Cup on Thursday. Trinidad and Tobago also won easily in the other Group C match, dispatching Guatemala 3-1.

Six-time Gold Cup winners Mexico dominated from the start, scoring four goals in the first half at a packed Soldier Field. It was difficult to tell whether the result was proof of a Mexican resurgence, however, given that six members of the Cuban squad were unable to obtain visas to enter the United States, while another reportedly defected once the team arrived in Chicago.

ARJEN ROBBEN: I Was To Honest About My Dives Against Mexico

Netherlands star Arjen Robben says he was too honest in confessing to a ‘silly’ dive against Mexico – but remains adamant that he did not cheat to win his team’s decisive penalty in the World Cup last-16 clash.

Holland beat Mexico 2-1 in Fortaleza on Sunday when Robben won a 93rd-minute spot-kick after a challenge from Rafael Marquez, which substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted to book a quarter-final match against Costa Rica.

Robben was branded a ‘cheat’ by Mexico coach Miguel Herrera and caused a storm when he admitted after the game that he had dived earlier in the match in an attempt to win a free-kick.

WORLD CUP 2014: Arjen Robben Apologises For Diving Against Mexico

Arjen Robben has apologised for diving during Netherland's dramatic comeback victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 at Arena Castelao on Sunday.

Robben tormented the Mexican defence on numerous occasions with his pace, skill and direct running, and had several penalty appeals turned down before finally winning a spot-kick in the second minute of injury time when he went down under a challenge from Rafael Marquez.

Substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar converted from 12 yards to send the Oranje into the last eight of the tournament, after Giovani dos Santos' opener had been cancelled out by a late Wesley Sneijder equaliser.

NETHERLANDS 2 MEXICO 1: Orange Boys Strike Late To Progress To Quarter Final

The Netherlands moved on to the World Cup quarterfinals with a comeback 2-1 win over Mexico on Sunday afternoon at the Estadio Castelão in Fortaleza.

A late goal from Wesley Sneijder and a penalty conversion from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar outweighed a 48th minute Giovani dos Santos strike to set the 2010-runners-up with a quarterfinal clash versus either Costa Rica or Greece.

Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera made only one change to his starting XI as Carlos Salcido subbed in for the suspended José Juan Vazquez in the three-man midfield. Otherwise, it was the usual cast of characters with Guillermo Ochoa in goal, Paul Aguilar and Miguel Layún as wingbacks and Rafa Márquez, Hector Moreno and Francisco Rodríguez as the center backs. Salcido joined midfielders Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado while Oribe Peralta and Dos Santos started up front as forwards.

WORLD CUP 2014: First Cooling Break Observed In Brazil 2014

The first cooling break has been observed at the Brazil 2014 World Cup. The Ref blew his whistle in the 30th minute to call for a cooling break. If you were wondering why the rule is simple when the heat condition of a match is to high a ref can call for a cooling break.

However the Mexicans have been on top of their game in the first 30mins with the orange boys recording zero shots on target. The venue of the match's weather condition is 38 degrees celcious. That can give you a clue to why the ref had to cal for a break.

WORLD CUP 2014: Netherlands vs Mexico Preview

3-5-2 versus 3-5-2? Whatever next? This isn’t just two teams who park the bus, either, although it will be interesting to see how both adapt to playing against teams who like to draw the opposition’s fire and then hit them on the counter-attack.

Mexico needed to avoid defeat against Croatia to progress to round two, so fielded their full-strength team with holding midfielder Jose Juan Vasquez subsequently picking up a second booking of the tournament and a one-game suspension. He’ll be a big miss, with no natural replacement and Carlos Pena probably stepping in.

Holland, meanwhile, had the luxury of rotating some players against Chile having already qualified. The suspended Robin van Persie will return in plain of Jeremain Lens, Jonathan de Guzman will come back into midfield at the expense of Georginio Wijnaldum and Dirk Kuyt is likely to make way for Bruno Martins Indi as Louis van Gaal reverts to the system that did for Spain and Australia.
