Former England defender Ashley Cole has arrived in Italy for a medical with AS Roma and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Serie A club.

"Welcome to Rome, Ashley", said the Italian club on its official Twitter feed, publishing a photo of the former Chelsea player on his arrival at Fiumicino airport on Monday morning.

According to the Italian media, left-back Cole is set to sign a two-year deal worth €2.3 million a year, with an option for a third season, as Roma look to strengthen their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

Ashley Cole appears set to sign for Roma after the Serie A club welcomed the former England left-back's arrival in Italy on Monday. Cole is a free agent after his contract with Chelsea expired and had been heavily linked with a move to the Stadio Olimpico in recent days.

The 33-year-old now seems to be on the verge of completing that switch, after Roma posted a picture on their official Twitter account announcing Cole's arrival.

An image of Cole was accompanied by the message: "Welcome to Rome, Ashley!"

According to the English newspaper, the 'Daily Mail', Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole has on his coffee table an offer from Barcelona. Apparently, Luis Enrique is wanting him to take over on Barça's left wing, and the player is free to walk. Milan is also out to hire the 33-year-old defender.

After eight years at Chelsea, Cole announced his desire to look for pastures new. The player is not presently on his best form, after having only played 17 of the 38 Premier league matches for the Blues - his worst season since he arrived at Stamford Bridge.
