It will be up to Cristiano Ronaldo to decide if he is going to play in the European Super Cup. He was the one who decided when to take some time out last season on account of his tendinitis injury, and everything points to him deciding when to return.
He listens to the advice of the club and the medical staff, but it is hard to stop him if he sets his heart on playing. This became extremely apparent in the last match of the United States tour, where his presence was above all symbolic. He was not really fit enough to play against Manchester United, but he did in the end come on for about 20 minutes at the end.
Before the game, Cristiano Ronaldo talked to the official Manchester United television station, the only media representative he spoke to in the whole US tour. He was interviewed by one of the United legends, Paddy Crerand, and he dropped hints to the Manchester United faithful when asked about a possible return.
"We have discussed putting me on, but let's see," Ronaldo told MUTV's Stewart Gardner and Paddy Crerand. "I want to play a little bit because it's my ex-club."
"I love Manchester and you never know in football. Of course I'm happy at Real Madrid; it's my home, it's my club, but United treated me unbelievably, so you never know."
"I remember when we [Real] played against United in the Champions League, my heart was so happy; they were fantastic moments. For me, it's one of the best clubs in the world", he added.
