"SO POPULAR" Ronaldo, Mourinho Tops List Of Most Online Mentions

Out of the ten best-paid athletes in the world, according to Forbes's annual ranking, Cristiano Ronaldo has got easily the most online mentions since January 2014.

Though boxer Floyd Mayweather tops world sport's cash charts - there's a reason why he's nicknamed Money, after all - CR7 wins hands down when it comes to media interest, with 741,969 mentions in news pieces since January compared to Mayweather's 110,228.

Lionel Messi lies second in the table drawn up by media analysts Cision, with 599,115 mentions, while basketball icon LeBron James sits third with 462,825. Coincidentally, the NBA star also placed third in Forbes's most recent list of highest-paid athletes.

Tennis aces Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, ranked second and third respectively in the ATP world rankings, have the fourth and fifth most online media mentions out of sport's biggest earners, followed in sixth and seventh place by golfers Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Incidentally, there were 423,447 recorded mentions of José Mourinho in online news coverage during the period examined, a figure that would catapult him into fourth in this list. This clearly illustrates that while the Special One may not rake in quite as many euros, dollars or pounds as the top players, he is more than a match for most when it comes to media appeal.
