Christian Benteke's controversial winning goal for Liverpool against Bournemouth on Monday should have been ruled out, the Premier League said in a rare comment on refereeing decisions on Friday.
An announcement on the League's website (www.premierleague.com) said all 20 clubs had received clarification this week about the amendment to the offside rule, which meant that the Liverpool goal should not have counted.
Benteke's goal was allowed to stand even though his teammate Philippe Coutinho, standing in an offside position, attempted to play the ball, distracting the visiting goalkeeper in the process.

Christian Benteke Will Fit Into Liverpool's System - Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers believes Christian Benteke will become a “huge player” for Liverpool and insists the striker is suited to his side’s style of play.
The Belgium international completed his £32.5 million move from Aston Villa earlier this week but former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has questioned whether the 24-year-old will be able to adapt to Rodgers’ “short, sharp and incisive passing game”.
Rodgers, however, has no concerns over Benteke’s versatility and says the Belgian’s record of 42 goals in 89 Premier League games was an important factor when targeting a new striker.

Liverpool Agree Benteke Transfer Deal
Liverpool have agreed to sign striker Christian Benteke from Premier League rivals Aston Villa for £32.5 million, the BBC and other British media organisations reported on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Belgium international is now due to have a medical, with Liverpool's club doctor set to return home from the team's pre-season tour of Australia to conduct proceedings.
It is not expected, however, that Benteke himself will join the tour. The forward arrived at Villa from Genk in a £7 million move in 2012 and has since scored 49 goals in 101 appearances for the Birmingham club.

Christian Benteke Won't Become A Liverpool Player - Tim Sherwood
Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood does not expect Liverpool’s reported interest in Christian Benteke to prise the Belgium striker away from Villa Park.
Goal revealed in April that Villa will not settle for anything less than £30 million for Benteke, who has a £32.5m release clause in his current contract.
The completion of Raheem Sterling's £49m switch from Liverpool to Manchester City on Tuesday has further stoked speculation that Brendan Rodgers will look to the Belgian to bolster his Anfield forward line.

The young Belgian forward was banging them in last season but has struggled in his second season in the Premier League.
Playing for Belgium tonight, Benteke produced a highly embarrassing miss which he’ll want to try and forget about ASAP. With an open goal gaping, Benteke incredibly fired over the bar.
