Arsenal Set To Overturn Champions League Return Leg At Munich Says Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his side’s 4-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Everton gives the Gunners a “perfect platform” to overturn their Champions League last-16 tie against Bayern Munich.

The north London outfit’s European hopes hang in the balance following a 2-0 first-leg defeat at the Emirates Stadium, and their chances of success in Germany for the return-leg this week are slim against a side who have only lost once at home this season.

But the Gunners were given a much needed boost ahead of the tie, as goals from Mesut Ozil, Mikel Arteta and an Olivier Giroud double led them to comfortable win against the Toffees.

And Wenger is hoping his side can repeat their battling performance to give Arsenal every chance of overcoming the European Champions.

“I was really pleased with our performance today, you could see the players were ready for a battle,” said the Frenchman.

“So let’s be inspired by our performance and go to Bayern and try to repeat that.

“People have questioned our desire to do well in the FA Cup many times, but we’re in the semi-final now and from our performance today you can see we really want it.

“The win was the perfect platform to go into a game where the statistics go against you [with Bayern leading 2-0 after the first-leg], but let’s make sure the performance goes for us, then we have a chance against them.

“I’m convinced we’ll have a real go.”
