JOSE MOURINHO: Diego Costa Better Than Aguero And Falcao

For long periods last season, it looked as if Chelsea were going to pip Manchester City and Liverpool to the Premier League crown, only to be let down by a lack of quality in the final third. Too many games had slipped out of the Blues reach against the so called lesser sides and Mourinho went public in his disapproval of his misfiring strikers.

This season, however, the Portuguese coach has little excuse as the West Londoners spent big on new recruits and brought in Europe’s most talked-about striker last season – Diego Costa.

The Brazilian-born goalscorer was once in the shadows of the likes of current City striker Sergio Aguero and Radamel Falcao at Atletico Madrid, but as soon as the duo moved on and the shackles eventually released, Costa proved his worth to the tune of 27 La Liga goals in 35 appearances.


Described as a bull by the Spanish press, Mourinho knows he has a potentially lethal Premier League striker on his hands and told the press how highly he rates his new player.

“He was in Portugal and I never looked at him! He went to Atletico and Sergio Aguero was the ­superstar, so Diego went on loan. Then, they brought in Radamel Falcao – and Diego went out on loan. He was behind very ­important players. When the chance came to go back, he showed he was better than the previous ones.” He said, quoted by the Mirror.

Manchester City man Aguero has scored 52 Premier League goals in 87 league appearances for the Citizens since moving from the Spanish capital, including 23 in his first season.

Diego Costa will certainly feel hard pressed to make such an impact as the Argentine star, though one can only suggest that Mourinho wouldn't have splashed £32 million on him if he felt he wasn't up to the task.
