Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has praised Diego Costa after he scored two goals in the Blues’ final pre-season game ahead of the new season, and is delighted with the Spaniard. While Mourinho also admitted that Chelsea waited for him, meaning the Blues did not sign a striker in January.
Costa, 25, signed for Chelsea earlier this summer and has been on fire during pre-season. The £32 million spent on the forward is a large fee but, judging on his performances this summer, it could be justified should he carry on his goal-scoring form.
The Spaniard struggled at the World Cup as he played in a different system and wasn’t fully fit after nursing a hamstring injury towards the end of the La Liga season, which he helped Atletico Madrid to win. But he’s now playing in a system suited to his strengths and has flourished, providing Mourinho something to be excited about as we head into the new season this weekend.
The Blues were crying out for a striker last season and Mourinho finally has what he wanted.
“What can we expect? I expect Diego and Diego is a team player who works hard, he’s not just about goals,” said Mourinho. “It’s about his defensive work, mentality and ambition. This is the player we bought and we were waiting for since last season. This is why we didn’t buy a striker in the winter market. We were waiting for him, we have him and hopefully everything goes well.
“He looks adapted to the team and the Premier League, not just Chelsea, should be happy. Sometimes we lose important players going to other countries and sometimes we bring new top players here.
“You can consider that [a bargain] because the market is crazy and the values are very high.
“For a striker like him, a champion in Spain, a Champions League finalist, a 25-year-old, we consider the price was very much in our favour.”
