SEX SCANDAL: Sunderland's Adam Johnson Arrested Over Sex Accusation With Under 16 School Girl

Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson has been suspended by the club after being arrested on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16. The 27-year-old England international was due to travel with the rest of the squad to east Yorkshire on Monday afternoon for Tuesday night’s Barclays Premier League fixture at Hull.

A club statement said: “Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation. No further comment will be made at the present time.”

Durham Police have confirmed that they arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old schoolgirl, with the Sun reporting that it is Johnson.

The England international was apparently questioned by police when three unmarked police cars and a van arrived at his £1.85m house in County Durham this morning. The newspaper also claimed that police found a loaded gun at the property, although it was said to be legally owned by the player.

Johnson was arrested at his home and has now been reportedly taken into custody.

“A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16,” said a spokesman for Durham Police.

“He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their inquiries.”

Johnson, who came through the youth ranks with Middlesbrough before joining Manchester City in 2010, moved to Sunderland in 2012 for £10m. He has won 12 caps for England, although “All the main activity was between 9.15am and 9.35am,” a neighbour was quoting as saying by The Sun.

“Three undercover cars and a scenes of crime van arrived. You could tell they were police officers, they were all dressed in black.

“I haven’t seen the player all day. I just assumed there had been a burglary. As far as I know he lives there with his girlfriend.”
