NIGERIANS ABROAD: Anichebe, Utaka, Chrisantus Hits Target

Out of favour Super Eagles strikers, John Utaka and Victor Anichebe scored for their clubs on Saturday in the Turkish and English top flights. Victor Anichebe was a second half substitute in England at The Hawthorns when he came off the bench to score for West Brom but his team went down 4-1 at home to struggling Queens Park Rangers.

West Brom are now 14th on the English Premier League table with 33 points from 31 games after Saturday’s defeat. The former Everton forward scored in the 58th minute when he headed home Saido Berahino’s cross, just 12 minutes after he was introduced into the game in place of Stephane Sessegnon.


The Baggies were 3-0 down before his introduction.

Anichebe has now scored two goals in the Premier league and three goals in the FA Cup games this season.

Brown Ideye played the entire duration for West Brom, while Nigerian-born defender Nedum Onuoha was in action from start to finish for QPR.

In Turkey, John Utaka, who is still adamant he has a lot to offer to the Nigerian national team scored for his Turkish Super League side Sivasspor  as they won 3-1 on the road at Eskisehirspor on Saturday to further move away from the relegation battlers.

Following the victory, Sivasspor are now 11th on the league table with 30 points from 26 games.

Utaka gave his side a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute after he come on as a 46th minutes substitute for Hakan Arslan.

He has now scored three goals in the league so far.

Another Eagles star,  Raheem Lawal was in action for Eskisehirspor but was substituted in the 63rd minute with Ibrahim Sissoko.

In Greece, former Nigeria youth international Macaulay Chrisantus was the hero of AEK Athens as he scored a brace in a 3-0 spanking of AOT Alimos in a Greek second division game.

AEK Athens remain top of the league table with 65 points from 24 games.

The former Sivasspor of Turkey forward opened the scoring for his side in the 10th minute and completed his brace in the 48th minute to give them a 2-0 lead.
