COPA LAGOS: Nigeria beat Lebanon 10-9

Nigeria's beach soccer team, 'Sand Eagles' won their second game at the on-going Copa Lagos beach soccer competition with a hard fought 10-9 win over an impressive Lebanon side that took the hosts all the way to sudden death penalty kicks. Read more after the cut......


Buoyed by the presence of the Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola took the game to the Lebanese and quickly raked up a 4-2 lead into the first period with Bartholomew leading the charge wit a hat trick.

The Lebanese team didn't sit back and rightfully clawed back to tie the game at 4-4 wit Hassam Fattal the chief architect in their charge

Nigerian skipper Isiaka Olawale missed a penalty to put Nigeria ahead at 4-4 but normal service resumed as Nigeria scored two more goals to edge ahead before Lebanon clawed their way back to tie the game at 6-6.

The ding-dong affair continued as the Lebanese tailed Nigeria at every score as Nigeria hit the post twice in succession as they searched for the winner in the 3rd period which didn't come to fruition.

Regulation time ended in a 6-6 stalemate and extra time was needed to separate the two sides as Lebanon started in a bright fashion, drawing a save from the Nigerian goalkeeper.

There wasn't much to separate the two sides as the game went into penalties to decide who will take the game as they are no draws in beach soccer.

Both teams scored their mandatory penalty kicks but Nigeria eventually triumphed 10-9 in sudden after Lebanon missed their own kick to put Nigeria top of the log as they round up their Copa Lagos 2013 campaign against African champions Senegal.

In the first match of the Saturday retinue, Senegal defeated Copa Lagos debutantes Germany 6-2 to record their first win of the competition and condemn Germany to their second loss of the tournament.
