PREMIER LEAGUE: The last 5 seasons have seen the teams on top at Xmas win the Title excluding Liverpool, can this change???

English football places a lot of emphasis on where teams are placed at Christmas, whether it be at the top or bottom of the Premier League. Liverpool are top of the table at Christmas but that has not done them much good the last three times that has happened - they finished second in 1990-91, came fourth in 1996-97 and were runners-up in 2008-09. The teams above on the table are teams that were on top of the league table in Christmas while the ones below won the League at the end of the season

This season, Christmas Day falls with 17 of the 38 games played and after Arsenal’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Monday night, Liverpool are somewhat surprisingly top of the tree.

Having failed to qualify for Europe in 2012/2013, Brendan Rodgers appears to be steering Liverpool to a title challenge, led by the irrepressible Luis Suarez.

With Liverpool facing Manchester City and Chelsea away in the next two games, the top of the table could change dramatically though in the coming week.

Historically, the last four teams to be top at Christmas have gone on to win the Premier League.

The last anomaly to this theory is Liverpool when they were led by Rafa Benitez and boasted the likes of Pepe Reina, Xabi Alonso, Javier Mascherano, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in the prime of their respective careers.

Liverpool supporters will be hoping 2008/2009 is not a preview of what might be coming in 2013/2014.
