Arsene Wenger's side squandered a number of first-half chances and West Ham looked like making them pay, with the Gunners losing influential midfielder Aaron Ramsey to injury. But Walcott and Podolski struck late on to settle the London Derby in Arsenal's favour. The visitors started the brighter of the two teams, with Olivier Giroud and Walcott going close to breaking the deadlock.
Adrian also made a good snap save from Santi Cazorla, while Arteta skimmed a shot wide.
West Ham had chances of their own in the first 45, the best of which a Mark Noble free-kick that Wojciech Szczesny tipped wide.
Sam Allardyce's side started the second period stronger though, with Cole tapping home just after the break.
But West Ham missed two good opportunities to double their lead, with Joey O'Brien heading just wide before Cole fluffed his lines.
Arsenal finally found their equaliser through Walcott, with Adrian largely responsible for allowing the winger's effort through his fingers.
Walcott then struck his first headed goal in the Premier League, before Podolski ended the Hammers' resistance with a pin-point drive.
