Former Super Eagles utility player, Garba Lawal has disagreed with national team Head Coach Stephen Keshi over the dropping of Villareal FC of Spain striker, Ike Uche from the team that will represent Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad on issue bothering on discipline.
Speaking in Abuja, Lawal stated that it is wrong of Keshi to drop one of the country’s best strikers for alleged acts of indiscipline adding that on the contrary the young man does not have a disciplinary record with the Super Eagles.
“I don’t believe in that statement. When you say a player is not disciplined, there should be evidence to prove that. If you say he is undisciplined, how come he is doing so well at his club without any complaints?," says Lawal.
“I have been following this boy week in week out; he has been very fantastic, scoring 12 goals. You don’t ignore such a player just for one single act’
He stated that it is the duty of Stephen Keshi to get the players to behave the way he wants with the sole purpose of getting the best out of him.
“Indiscipline how? You are the coach and you are like a teacher to the players. If you know what you want in him, you can change him if he is not disciplined. I believe he can change him as a coach.”
Lawal, who is also a member of the NFF technical committee maintained that the World Cup is not a child’s play as every participating country must go with their very best leg if they plan to do well.
The ex-international further said there is very little they at the technical committee can do as they do not want to interfere with the job of the coach, “Our job as the technical committee is to advise him; even the NFF board job is to also advise him. We cannot tell him who to invite” he stated
