WINTERBURN: Arsenal Must Beat United To Keep Title Hopes Alive

Arsenal must beat Manchester United on Wednesday night otherwise it could spell the end of their Premier League title charge, according to Nigel Winterburn. The Gunners have just started a key run of fixtures, as they seek a first trophy since 2005, but things did not get off to the best of starts when Arsene Wenger's side were walloped 5-1 at Liverpool on Saturday.

The defeat meant the north London side slipped to second, a point behind Chelsea, and Winterburn warned they must get back to winning ways when the Premier League champions visit the Emirates.

"Arsenal have to win, it’s quite simple. They’ve got to show some character, they’ve got to beat a Manchester United team that’s not in great form," the former Gunners defender told Press Pass.

"They have some fantastic players but they’re not playing to their full potential. If Arsenal don’t win then everybody will write them off."

Despite a low key January transfer window, which saw only the loan addition of the crocked Kim Kallstrom, Winterburn maintained that Arsenal are making progress towards finally lifting some silverware.

"I’m pleased Arsenal have now stopped selling their best players and they’ve brought in [Mesut] Ozil because to me it makes a statement that maybe Asenal are starting to move in the right direction again.

"I believe over the next couple of seasons Arsenal will win a trophy. It may be too early for them this season but it looks as if things are moving forward in the club, rather than going reverse as it has done over the last three seasons."
