JAMMIE CARRAGHER: Liverpool Have A Premier League Title Advantage

Jamie Carragher is impressed with the way Brendan Rodgers has turned things around after a 'nightmare' start to life at Liverpool, and believes his old club have an advantage that can help them succeed in the Premier League title race.

Speaking to talkSPORT's Weekend Sports Breakfast, the Anfield idol was full of praise for Liverpool and pointed to a factor that could yet help his old side finish the season in top spot.

"He [Brendan Rodgers] has been fortunate with no Europe," Carragher said.

"It was probably a blessing in disguise missing out on the Europa League last season. Jose Mourinho keeps mentioning it, that Liverpool have less games, but that is to Liverpool’s advantage, it’s not their problem, they’ve had a great season.

"If they’re playing less games and it gives them more chance to be successful, that’s the name of the game."

Carragher also had words of praise for his former manager.

"When he came in it was difficult to start with," the 2005 Champions League winner explained, having played under Rodgers during the Northern Irishman's first season at the helm.

"It was a nightmare for him, not the August gone, but the one before, the transfer deadline [in August 2012] when he missed out on a couple of players.

"It wasn’t until January [2013] when he got Coutinho in, he brought Sturridge in, that you felt that he was really stamping his mark on the team and putting players in who he wanted.

"Luis Suarez at the time was the only striker, so to bring those two players in, if you look at Liverpool’s record since, not just the start of this season, probably since January [2013] and those players coming in to the team, it’s probably been as good as anyone’s."
