'La Liga' is red hot right now. With three challengers battling it out for the title, it is the most hotly-contested championship of recent years. It is a very close call between Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid and the champion will be decided over the next dozen matchweeks.
Real Madrid is the current leader, Barça is hot on its heels - trailing by just one point - and Atleti is much more than the best of the rest. It is only one win behind 'Los Blancos' (with the goal average in its favour) and, in the derby, it recently demonstrated that is very much in the running.
Twelve games could be a lot or very few, depending on how you look at it. All three teams will have an eye on the other two stadiums during every 'la Liga' outing. The 'Clasico' on Sunday 23rd March (21.00) is the next big date on the calendar.
That will follow Schalke's visit to the Bernabéu, a mere formality ahead of some important battles in its quest to conquer Europe.
Real Madrid-Barça in some days time will be the penultimate head-on battle. The last will come in the final 'la Liga' tie: a Barcelona-Atlético at Camp Nou. That will sound the final horn, but what we don't yet know is whether we will already have a champion by then.
Real's fate is in its own hands, as Barcelona's will be if it triumphs at the Bernabéu. All three are aware of where their greatest challenges lie, but any one of them could stumble when least expected. The Spanish League champion's trophy will be in play every weekend and, sometimes, during the week too (matchweek 30).
