The former Barcelona boss has claimed back-to-back Bundesliga titles and one DFB-Pokal since arriving at the Allianz Arena in 2013, but has twice been knocked out at the semi-final stage in Europe.
Effenberg, who clinched Europe's top prize in 2001, admits the pressure is growing on Guardiola's shoulders to seal continental success along with domestic dominance.
He told Sky: "Guardiola is a world-class coach. But he has to prove now that he can win the Champions League with this squad, because that's what FC Bayern are expecting. Furthermore, there is an appeal to be the first team with four Bundesliga titles in a row. That's the motivation for Bayern."
Talk remains rife that Guardiola will not extend his stay at the Allianz Arena beyond next summer, with Manchester City widely touted as a potential next destination, and Effenberg concedes the coach's uncertain future is a worry for the club.
"That is something worrying for Bayern," said the former Germany international. "That Guardiola obviously doesn't know if he is the right coach for Bayern fuels the discussions even more. That was quite surprising for me."
Effenberg, meanwhile, believes Bastain Schweinsteiger made the right choice to leave for Manchester United this summer and has hailed the signing of Chile star Arturo Vidal as his replacement.
"From a sportive perspective it was the right decision," he said of Schweinsteiger. "He moves from a world-class club to another world-class club. Manchester United are able to win the Champions League as well.
"It will also be a new experience for Bastian. I can understand him. Everyone is replaceable at Bayern - there is the possibility of buying players that cost €30m or €40m."
"I like such characters - maybe he was missing at Bayern," he added of Vidal. "He is a player who can set an example if necessary. With his behaviour, his aggression and his potential as a player he brings something new to Bayern's midfield, which has been missing before."
Effenberg has also urged Mario Gotze to force his way into Guardiola's plans after inconsistent form for Bayern since his switch from Borussia Dortmund.
"He is an exceptional football player who needs the coach's trust," he said. "That was the reason why he showed some world-class performances under Jurgen Kopp at Dortmund.
"That's different at Munich, where you have 20 more world-class players. That might be a reason why he isn't feeling that comfortable. He needs to pursue the maximum, otherwise he is wrong here. He should try to win through and prove the performances he showed at BVB - then he will be world class."
