Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United can knock defending champions Bayern Munich out of the Champions League. United held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford last week but go into Wednesday’s second leg as the underdogs.
But while they are only seventh in the Premier League and Bayern have already won the Bundesliga title, the England international insists David Moyes’ side have the quality to beat the tournament favourites.
Rooney told Uefa.com: “We believe we can go through, we believe we have good enough players. It will be tough because, for me, Bayern and Barcelona are probably the two best teams in the competition.”
Rooney scored on United’s last trip to the Allianz Arena, the quarterfinals in 2010, and he accepts they have little margin for error against a Bayern team who have only been beaten three times in the last year.
He added: “We have to be at our best, we have to be focused and prepare well. We are ready. It is an exciting game for us, for the fans. It's a massive game to be involved in."
Rooney, who is a doubt with a toe injury, trained on Tuesday morning in Manchester and boarded the plane to Germany.
