Messi joins Barça's first team and is given a professional contract. He has yet to show his full potential.

Messi dazzles everyone in the summer trophy against Juventus, earning himself well-deserved praise from Fabio Capello. Barça, who up until then had been considering sending him out on loan, decide to improve his terms in September 2005 and he stays with the team under coach Frank Rijkaard's orders.

Leo is attracting a lot of interest from other clubs who are aware of his huge potential. To pre-empt any possibility of him escaping, the club ensure he signs an ironclad contract which includes a €150 million buy-out clause and an extension to 2014.

In June 2007 Ronaldinho leaves the club and Messi becomes the star, prompting Barça to improve his terms. His pay packet is increased to €8.5 million but the duration of his contract is left the same.
- By September 2009, he is the highest paid player on the team
The Argentine international is summoned to the wood-panelled offices once again. This time it's to sign a new contract until 2016 including a higher buy-out clause. Any club wanting to snap up the prolific forward would have to dig deep to the tune of €250 million. His annual salary also jumps to €11 million.
- In February 2013 he signs until 2018
Leo extends his contract for another two years with no variation in the buy-out clause and increased wages of €16 million net per season including a basic salary and objective-based bonuses which require he play 65 percent of the club's competitive matches and that the team qualify for the Champions League.
- His latest contract will see him pocket €20 million
He could earn a further €3 million in bonuses
