Mikel has been declared surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona and the retention of the defensive midfield duo of Nemanja Matic and Ramires.
It was widely reported on Tuesday that Chelsea had offered the Nigerian to a number of Serie A clubs and Tuttomercatoweb in its online edition of Wednesday July 16 revealed that AC Milan was offered the midfielder but rejected the chance.
The Rossoneri,the website reported rejected Mikel for both economic and football reasons.
‘AC Milan rejected the offer of Mikel because of the five million euros price tag as well as the fact that the club has enough defensive midfielders in its rank,”wrote the website.
AC Milan have also been linked with Bracelona’s Alexander Song and there are suggestions the Rossoneri would prefer the Camerounian who they believe is a more versatile player.
Mikel’s performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and his high wage demand have not helped his cause.
He made 11 starts for Chelsea in the 2013/2014 season and scored only once-onSeptember 21 in the 2-0 English Premier League win over Fulham at Stamford Bridge. It was his fist league goal since he joined the Blues in June 2006 from Norwegian side, Lyn Oslo.
He has scored a total of four goals for Chelsea-three in the FA Cup and the solitary league goal last year.
