San Lorenzo have announced that their new stadium will be named after Pope Francis. The Primera Division side are planning on building a new stadium and the worldwide leader of the catholic church has been a supporter since his childhood.
The new ground will be built in Boedo, the Buenos Aires neighbourhood where San Lorenzo played their home matches before they forced to sell the land to the military in 1979. Now, though, the club have repurchased the area with the help of donations from fans.
"The name of the future stadium on La Plata Avenue has been approved. It will be called: Pope Francis," the club announced on Twitter.
A supermarket chain who had bought the site from the military were forced to sell it in a high-profile court case and San Lorenzo are hoping to inaugurate it in 2016.
San Lorenzo won the Copa Libertadores and the Torneo Incinal in the Argentine top flight last season.
