Rooney has been in talks with the Premier League champions for several weeks but reports suggested a deal was being held up by a dispute over the England international’s image rights.
But the United are unconcerned, a source told ESPN, and while they have not put a date on when negotiations will be concluded, it is expected to be soon.
Rooney’s deal is set to last until 2019 and will be worth 300,000 pounds a week -- which will make him the best-paid player in United’s history.
His current contract, which was signed in October 2010, is due to expire in the summer of 2015 and United risked losing the 28-year-old on a free transfer by refusing to sell him.
They rejected two offers from Chelsea last summer, when Rooney was unsettled, but the striker has been restored to the side by manager David Moyes and has become a pivotal player for United again.
Rooney has scored 11 goals this season to take his total for United to 208, just 41 short of Sir Bobby Charlton’s club record.
