Despite injury at the end of the calendar year, Messi is the current holder, having won it four times and has been nominated every year since 2007.
Ronaldo won it in 2009 and appears to be the favourite this year having produced some incredible form in recent weeks, particularly with a hat-trick for Portugal v Sweden to seal his country’s World Cup spot.
Of all the three, Ribery won by the most silverware in 2013 and was the leading man in a brilliant Bayern Munich side that swept up all comers.
All the recent change of rules and favourism might not guarantee CR7 the Trophy according to rumours....
