PAUL BASSEY: Kelechi will waste away at Manchester City

Reactions have continued to trail the proposed move of Most Valuable Player, MVP at the UAE 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho to English Premier League giants, Manchester City. The latest is coming from a member of Nigeria Football Federation, NFF Technical and Development Committee, Paul Bassey. Read more after the cut....

The youngster, who was training with Nigeria’s senior squad ahead of January’s African Nations Championship, CHAN, a tournament predominantly for African-based players — has opted to move to England for trials with City and Bassey feels the transfer is money induced.
Bassey, who is also a CAF General Coordinator, said that he did not see the possibility of Iheanacho breaking into the first team of City as there are already established names in the English club for now.
He stated that he didn’t believe that City have a good youth programme as he is yet to see a product from their academy graduating into the first team.
Bassey opined that he would have loved to see Iheanacho move to teams where he would be given regular playing chances as this would also help him become a better player.
“I don’t know why he moved to Manchester City, there are teams in Portugal or Holland that would have been good for him. He is going to City to waste his time and this might be dangerous for the career of this young boy,” said former publisher of the defunct Today’s Sports.
