Wayne Rooney Aiming To Be Man United's All Time Highest Goal Scorer

Wayne Rooney says he is ready to become Manchester United's top scorer again - and has challenged his new team-mates to make history. The England international performed a number of roles for Louis van Gaal last season - even appearing in a holding midfield slot.

But Rooney wants to play where he feels he is most effective - as a No 9 - and speaking ahead of United's US friendly with Barcelona he revealed he is ready to score goals.

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney says he is ready to become the club's top scorer this season. Rooney performed a number of roles for Manchester United last term but is keen to play as a number nine

The forward appeared in high spirits as Man United trained in San Jose on Friday ahead of facing Barcelona

'I am ready to take that mantle on and be the one who gets the goals for us,' said the former Everton star, who scored twelve Premier League goals last term.
'It (striker) is a position where I think I can score goals - hopefully I can do that.'
When asked if he had set any targets for this year Rooney, who scored 34 in all competitions in 2009-10 and 2011-12 while playing up front, said that was not the case.
'None at the minute,' he explained.
'Obviously, I'm working on getting fit and ready for the start of the season. I have never really been one to set personal targets, I just want to do well for the team.'
