Argentinian winger Angel Di Maria is set to end his Manchester United career on a miserable note - after being fined two weeks wages by the club for missing their pre-season tour of the United States.
The 27-year-old was meant to meet up with the squad on July 25 but failed to report for duty, amid reports that he was set to complete a move to Paris Saint Germain. L'Equipe have reported on Friday that the player has agreed a four-year contract with the French champions and the transfer could even be announced over the weekend.
United are set to make a £15m loss on the £59.7m they paid Real Madrid for the player just last summer, with reports emerging recently that a £44.2m deal had been agreed.
Louis van Gaal had expected the player to meet with the club last weekend, though French football expert Julien Laurens has told talkSPORT that the player is still in Argentina nursing an injury he picked up during their Copa America campaign.
He said: “He is still in Argentina. I don’t know if he keeps missing flights so he doesn’t have to join up with the United squad, but he’s still in Argentina – he’s nursing the injury picked up in the Copa America final.
“He’s waiting for the deal to be agreed between both clubs and then he’ll fly over to Paris to pass a medical and sign his contract – I think he will stay in Argentina until the deal is announced.
“PSG have been optimistic for the last month and a half but it seems it’s getting closer and closer now, especially between his agent Jorge Mendes and the club.”
Di Maria's no show for the pre-season tour is set to cost him a hefty £360,000, after United decided to issue the fine for his absence. The former Real Madrid player is set to be replaced at Old Trafford by Pedro, who is waiting on his exit to complete a £22m deal to take him to Manchester.
