Is this why Chelsea haven’t really splashed the cash so far this transfer window?
It’s been a rather stagnant summer in the transfer department at Stamford Bridge, as Jose Mourinho has brought Radamel Falcao in on a season-long loan from Monaco, while the Blues splurged a reported £8m on signing Asmir Begovic to replace Petr Cech.
As Chelsea stay frugal, the club’s owner Roman Abramovich is spending a fortune in the Big Apple.
According to the New York Daily News, Abramovich has now spent almost $80m buying up three townhouses on an Upper East Side block in New York in order to build a mega-mansion.
The three properties cost $29.7m, $18.3m and $30m individually.
After acquiring all the buildings, Abramovich now plans to knock them all down to build his American dream home. The cost of that build is unknown, but it clearly won’t be cheap.
Abramovich plans to live in the mansion with girlfriend Dasha Zhukova, the mother of two of his seven children.
