The French international had looked set for a move to West Brom earlier this week after the 29- year-old had a medical at The Hawthorns, but the player has instead opted on a return to Ligue 1 nine years after leaving French club Auexerre.
Abou Diaby made 182 appearances for Arsenal since joining the club in 2006 but a nightmare of injury problems have restricted the midfielder to just two appearances in two seasons.
It is no secret that Arsenal are keen to sign a defensive midfielder in the transfer market but only if the right player becomes available as the club look to find a long term successor to Mikel Arteta.
In recent weeks Barcelona starlet Sergi Samper has been linked with a move to the Emirates but it is understood that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is not interested in signing the 20-year-old this summer.
