Bosnia-Herzegovina playmaker, Zvjezdan Misimovic has predicted a do-or-die battle against Nigeria in their second group F game on June 21,2014 if they lose their opening game to Argentina six days earlier. Read more after the cut.....
In an interview after he received his award in Sarajevo as the 2013 Bosnia-Herzegovina Male Athlete of the Year early this week,Misimovic was asked for his reaction to the 2014 FIFA World Cup draw on December 6 that pits his side against Argentina,Nigeria and Iran.
''It’s a decent group. It could have gone better for us, but it also could have gone much worse. Overall, I’m satisfied. I’m only concerned with the schedule. Our first match is against Argentina, if we lose, it’s do or die against Nigeria which could create a lot of pressure,''he said adding that his country has only an outside chance of beating Argentina in their opening group game.
''They’re a side that’s not only the favorite in our group, but at the whole tournament. We’re not without our own chances, but Argentina is better than us,''he said matter-of-factly.
The China-based player reveals that the team's main strength is in the chemistry between the players and the coaching staff and admits he knows practically nothing about Iran.
''To be honest, I don’t know much about Iran and their players. I played them once in Tehran. In terms of quality, the three teams are pretty much on the same level. We have to stay focused and stay positive in our ability, and not over or underestimate anyone.''
Misimovic won 2013 Bosnia-Herzegovina Male Athlete of the Year award thanks to the successes of the Bosnia-Herzegovina national football team, which will find itself among the best teams in the world at the World Cup in Brazil. Many have classified him as the ‘brain’ of the Bosnian team with his playmaking abilities. His creativity in the game has often left people breathless. He ended the qualifying campaign for the World Cup with five goals and four assists.
He played nine games and spent 773 minutes on the field. Misimovic holds the record in terms of times capped for the national team, which stands at 80. He has scored 26 goals and is in second place of the top scorers of the national team, after Edin Dzeko.
