NIGERIA: Abuja Stadium Will Not Be Sold

Julius Ogunro, special assistant on media to the sports minister, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has stated that the Abuja national stadium may not be concessioned as the federal government approved the concessioning of the National Stadium in Lagos to serve as a pilot for other federal stadia to be concessioned.

‘We do not seem to have any problem with the Abuja national stadium, the pitch has just been re-grassed, the environment is clean and we have been having sporting activities there”

“I do not think we have any difficulty running the stadium and so it should not be one of the stadia to be concessioned because we have it under our control and we are doing well”

The national stadium in Lagos was built and opened in 1972 and hosted football matches until 2001 and has been left in a state dilapidation and ruin since 2002 but the federal government is now ready to renovate  and the bring the edifice back to world class standards before it will be concessioned.
