Arsene Wenger has refused to blame England for the injury that will keep Jack Wilshere out for six weeks.
The Arsenal midfielder is set to miss around eight matches after sustaining a fracture in his left foot in a tackle with Daniel Agger during England’s friendly win over Denmark on Wednesday night. That challenge happened in the 12th minute, but he played on until the hour mark before being substituted and claimed afterwards it was only bruising.
Further scans, however, revealed a miniscule fracture but Wenger insists the England medical staff were not to blame.
"At some stage it is the player who gives you the indication, you trust always the player," the Arsenal manager said.
"Sometimes you give him a few minutes to tell you how he feels and if he has pain, we cannot make an instant decision with an X-ray, so it is the player who tells you if he can go on or not.
"I believe it [the tackle] was accidental. Jack will be out for six weeks. It is a blow for him and for us, from now on we want to get him to recover and come back as quickly as possible.”
Wenger also revealed Wilshere has now gone away on a break as he recovers from this latest injury setback.
"You can only be very down, especially in the first days,” he added. "He is in a boot and has gone away for a few days to get away from things and think about something else."
