A dismal first season under new boss David Moyes sunk to a new low this week with a 2-0 defeat to Olympiakos in the Champions League, leading to suggestions the beleaguered Scot will be given a huge transfer warchest to work with when the season is over.
But the former Red Devils winger believes spending big will not sort out all the club's problems and pointed to how it has already cost a combined £64.5m to land Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata, neither of whom have impressed yet.
"We’ve seen two players [arrive] in Fellaini and Mata. Fellaini is never a Man United player and Juan Mata is being played all over the place, he’s a shadow of what he saw at Chelsea," he told Extra Time.
"It’s frightening that’s £75m [sic] and then we’re left with £125m. That would give us four players at that price. We’ve got no chance with that especially in today’s market.
"We're going in for players that aren't the calibre. We have no identity in our football at this moment in time. We have no leaders.
"We’re relying virtually on the ability of Wayne Rooney and Van Persie to pull us out and unfortunately that isn’t going to do it. Two players aren’t going to get you out of the stick you’re in."
Asked by Matt Forde whether he could see Moyes in charge in the next year or two, Hill replied: "[He] may not be. The time clock is ticking now and it’s ticking very rapidly."
