England players’ wives and girlfriends(WAGS) have been given the green light by Roy Hodgson to accompany the World Cup squad to Miami this summer.
The Three Lions manager has also opened the door to players’ partners joining the squad in Brazil when the tournament starts.
After a training camp in Portugal, which wives and girlfriends are not permitted to attend, Hodgson’s squad fly to Florida for warm-up matches against Ecuador and Honduras before heading to their tournament base in Rio de Janeiro.
Despite Miami and Rio being famous for nightlife and partying, Hodgson has decided that England’s WAGs can make the trip with the players.
‘In Miami, we have invited the players or suggested to the players that their wives could come for the later part of the stay there.
‘And when it comes to Brazil, we haven’t made any hard and fast rules,’ said the England manager.
‘It will be up to the players to decide, presumably around the games more than anything else, if they want to bring their wives there.
‘But there are issues – and I think it’s important that they understand what issues there are likely to be – in terms of security if their wives do come, and if they make a decision to bring their wives, it will be done with the full facts at their disposal.’
Hodgson hopes a group discussion will help prepare the players for what lies in store for them during the tournament.
‘It will be a 25-30 minute talk,’ the 66-year-old said. ‘We will be encapsulating all of those things.
‘I want the players to go away and think about what they need to do to be ready – in terms of mass media, sponsorship etc – if they are selected in the 23.’
