Jose Mourinho announced that he will not be taking any sabbatical leave. With some days of football so many clubs have made contact but sources say Mourinho is more keen for the Manchester job.
And, despite leaving the club just one point off the Premier League’s bottom-three, it seems Mourinho is just as in-demand as ever.
The boss is said to have received offers from numerous clubs already, but what are the latest rumours and reports?
Here’s what the papers say…
The Independent
Mourinho has already turned down an offer from Roma, despite announcing his intensions to go straight back into management just two days after being sacked by Chelsea. The Portuguese released a statement this week insisting “he will not be taking a sabbatical”. By this time, Roma had already made contact, but Mourinho is understood to have turned down the Serie A side. The 52-year-old former Chelsea manager is targeting the manager’s job at Manchester United – a situation that could come closer to happening after Louis van Gaal’s side lost 2-1 at home to Norwich City yesterday. The Independent on Sundayhas been told, however, that Mourinho has received a number of other offers – although none from the elite band of super clubs.
Daily Mail
Manchester United are close to hitting the panic button, and could turn to Mourinho to replace the struggling Louis van Gaal as manager. United supporters’ discontent with Van Gaal scaled new heights with the 2-1 defeat to lowly Norwich on Saturday, and pulses in the north have been quickened by the knowledge that Mourinho is ready to go straight back to work. You could even say that the statement released on his behalf on Saturday morning was aimed at the United hierarchy and United’s fans to make doubly sure they know he’s available. There are growing fears at Old Trafford that, despite the hundreds of millions of pounds Woodward has thrown at new players, United are getting left behind. Maybe it’s time to call for Jose, a man who has been allowed to brush off his failure at Chelsea as if it were an impertinent impostor. It would hardly be a surprise if United leapt into his arms.
Daily Express
Chelsea have been in talks with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone for the past month after targeting the Argentine as Jose Mourinho’s successor. Blues owner Roman Abramovich knows a move for in-demand Pep Guardiola is doomed to failure with Manchester City well down the path to appointing Spaniard boss in the summer following the confirmation of his Bayern Munich exit. Not wanting to be faced with another high profile snub, the Russian has switched his attention to 45-year-old Simeone who has won La Liga and Europa League titles and reached the Champions League final in four years at Atletico. An emotional character on the touchline, Chelsea believe that Simeone will immediately engage with the Stamford Bridge fans, many of whom are angry with Mourinho’s sacking. Simeone who doesn’t speak English is understood to be excited at the prospect of managing in the Premier League having already made the decision to listen to offers at the end of the season, believing his time with Atletico is up.
Daily Telegraph
Jose Mourinho pleaded for Abramovich's help before his sacking, believing that a face-to-face pep talk to the squad would've helped them out of their slump. But the club’s owner only did so after the sacking of Mourinho, addressing the players after training at Cobham on Friday when he told them that it was their responsibility to turn around the season, starting with Sunderland who they beat 3-1 at Stamford Bridge to climb to 15th place.
Daily Star
Mourinho’s exit came as no surprise to Chelsea players, according to the Daily Star. enior members of the dressing-room had been predicting all season that a major change at the club was imminent. That was based on Mourinho’s mood – from the beginning of the campaign. One influential Chelsea star had been telling friends in the game: “Jose is not the same person this season. But Mourinho made it clear he has not fallen out of love with the game and does not intend taking a long break from football.
