MARCEL DESAILLY: Chelsea Are Still Title Contenders

Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly insists his former side’s Premier League title hopes are still very much alive, despite a slip-up against Crystal Palace.

John Terry's own-goal saw the Blues slump to a shock 1-0 defeat to the Eagles, with manager Jose Mourinho insisting the team's title hopes were over with the loss.

But, speaking to the Weekend Sports Breakfast, Desailly said the Blues need to believe they can still finish first, with the unusual nature of this season’s Premier League making anything possible.

“[The title] gone? No it’s not gone," said the Frenchman. "You still have to believe and continue. This league this year is a bit special, every single team can lose against smaller opponents. We still have to believe it.”

While Chelsea face a tough test against PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals this week, Desailly feels Jose Mourinho would prefer to win the major domestic trophy over the European Cup.

He added: “We know that the commitment of Chelsea is to win every single thing in the season. Strangely, I think Mourinho would prefer to win the Premier League again, to have real power in front of the management to spend big money next year and buy new players.”

The France World Cup winner added that in his home nation there is huge pressure on PSG to achieve in the Champions League this season, and he believes the first leg of the quarter-final clash against Chelsea will be crucial.

“We are all expecting something from Paris. Last year they lost the quarter-final to Barcelona. In France, every single person is expecting them to go through at least to the semi-final to improve from last year.

"When you see the quantity of money they’ve spent, for the French league it’s amazing. The Champions League has the sweetness now; the French league doesn’t attract them anymore. They’ve won it two times already, they really want the Champions League, it’s going to be a tough game. All will be decided in Paris. If Chelsea manage to score or succeed in Paris I don’t see Paris coming back to Stamford Bridge. With the stats Chelsea have at home, Paris can’t win.”
