Cristiano Ronaldo Is Worth €149 million Says University Researchers

Cristiano Ronaldo is worth €149 million according to a study carried out by a group of researchers at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV). This figure has been arrived at through a comparison between Ronaldo and similar players such as Luis Suárez, Gareth Bale and Diego Costa.

The study in question considered a number of factors, including age, statistical measures such as goals scored, assists and yellow/red cards, and value judgement on intangibles such as leadership skills.

As well as comparing the above-mentioned factors, the research took into account the transfer fees each player commanded in their recent moves: Real Madrid coughed up €91m to capture Bale from Tottenham, Chelsea paid €38m to sign Costa from Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona shelled out €81m to land Suárez from Liverpool.

Ronaldo had the best goals-per-game ratio of the lot, the second best assists tally (behind Bale) and the third worst disciplinary record.

The academics involved believe that their methodology can be applied in the transfer market to calculate how much particular players are worth and therefore identify the best-value targets in a given position.

Fans of Spanish football, the Premier League and the two Manchester rivals may be interested to know that a related study rated David Silva at €33.5m and Juan Mata at €24m.
