Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has accepted full responsibility for his side’s 5-0 demolishing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday, and admitted his future at the club is out of his hands. Read more after the cut.....
A ten-man Spurs were totally outplayed by Brendan Rodgers’ Reds at White Hart Lane, as Luis Suarez continued his fine goalscoring form with a brace to put Spurs to the sword.
The Uruguayan has netted two more goals than the entire Tottenham team have mustered in the Premier League this season, with his double taking his tally to 17 in 12 appearances.
Their failure to find the net is but one of Spurs’ issues as Villas-Boas also faces a crisis in defence, with the Portuguese coach having to field a makeshift back-four – which included midfielder Etienne Capoue – that were clinically pulled apart by Liverpool.
If Villas-Boas was under the spotlight following Spurs’ demoralising 6-0 defeat to Man City, many are again questioning how much patience the north London outfit have with the Portuguese coach following another shocking display.
And when asked whether he expects to manage the side for Wednesday’s Capital One Cup tie against West Ham, Villas-Boas conceded:
“It’s a question you can only ask the board, I cannot decide for others.
“I understand that pressure is there. There are expectations at the club and while we are fulfilling most of them, our run in the Premier League is not up to our standards.
“The pressure is normal, I have to accept it. Results aren’t going the way we want and we have to focus now again to have a response like we did after the game against City.
“Liverpool were excellent today and we were poor, I assume responsibility of the failure.”
The Reds ran riot in north London as Tottenham’s improvised defensive line were terrorised by Suarez, Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling, and the Tottenham chief said his side were well and truly conquered by the visitors.
“We were well defeated. Liverpool were much better than us throughout the game and when we went one man down against a team that are so on top of us, it was very difficult.”
