WORLD CUP: In Form Luis Suarez In Golden Boot Chase

You can’t keep him quiet for long. Luis Suarez brushed aside injury fears after sitting out Uruguay’s opening game with two goals to all but seal England’s elimination, both expertly taken and enough to remind Golden Boot contenders that the Liverpool striker will have a say in the outcome of that prize.

His first goal was a combination of speed of thought and movement, with the headed finish from Edinson Cavani’s cross perfectly executed to leave Joe Hart no chance in England’s goal.

Wayne Rooney equalised with his first-ever World Cup goal but there was no stopping Suarez, who was lightning fast to race after a long punt inadvertently headed into his path by Steven Gerrard, shooting powerfully past Hart.

Already on two goals for the tournament thanks to their exploits in the earlier game are Colombia’s James Rodriguez, who opened the scoring in the 2-1 win against Ivory Coast. Gervinho deftly skipped past three Colombia defenders before scoring a glorious equaliser but Juan Quintero won it for the South Americans.

In the day’s other game, Japan were unable to break down 10-man Greece – a goalless draw which actually sent Colombia through.
