Luis Suárez has slipped quietly back to Uruguay to take refuge at his mother's house on the outskirts of Montevideo after being thrown out of the World Cup for biting Italian Giorgio Chiellini.
The Liverpool striker arrived in Uruguay during the early hours of Friday morning, where a handful of people were waiting for him, with hundreds of fans having left around midnight after spending several hours waiting for him to greet him and show their support.
Uruguay's President, José Mujica, also spent an hour at the Montevideo airport terminal, but left after being told the flight had been delayed.
Despite the support shown by the majority of the press and the fans, however, since Suárez stepped onto Uruguayan soil there have been no big demonstrations outside the home where he is staying with his family, 39 kilometres from the capital.
The fans have decided to respect the player's privacy and allow him to rest and reflect, at least for the first few hours after making the trip from Brazil. Thousands of people have expressed their sympathy towards the player and their desire to help via the media and social networks.
Of course, he also has his critics: "The first thing people like that need to do is recognise the problem, internalise it and seek professional help to learn how to modify this type of aggressive reaction", psychologist Alfonso Martínez wrote in an article.
